Ponds are a very popular landscaping feature. Who doesn’t love the sights and sounds of a lovely pond in their yard? But if you are thinking of installing a pond, there are some pond care tips you should know.
With more than 12 years of experience in the pond, pumping and fountain industry, we at Nashville Pond are very familiar with the ins and outs of ponds. Consider these pond care tips to get you started.
Choose A Pond Location
Some people think a pond needs to be a good distance away from the house, but that is not always the case. Many people enjoy having their pond just outside their back deck or porch. A pond with a fountain can be very soothing and relaxing, perfect to sit by after a long day at work. Once you know the size of the pond you want, you can determine the best location.
Will it Be In-Ground or Above-Ground?
This is also a preference issue. Many love the natural look of an in-ground pond but some pond owners like to have a raised pond. This makes for easier access and you don’t worry about anyone falling into your pond.
Aerators Are a Must
For a pond to be healthy, you want to make sure your pond has an aerator to keep the water moving. This allows oxygen to circulate throughout your pond, keeping it clean and promoting plant and fish growth
Add the Right Plants
As everyone knows, all plants are not created equal. Some are perfect for the pond life, while others can be toxic to fish. Make sure you do your research before purchasing plants for your pond. For more on this, check out our recent blog post.
When to Add Fish
If you’re adding fish to your pond, wait until two to three weeks after you’ve added your plants. This will create a friendly environment for the fish and give them some pond scum to consume. Don’t add too many at one time as it could throw off the pond’s chemical balance. It’s better to add a few at a time.
Enlist Pond Watchers
If you’re going to be out of town for an extended period of time, have a neighbor plan to come by and check out your pond, especially if you have fish in your pond. Other wildlife can sometimes wreak havoc on ponds and fountains.
